  • Laravel, time zones and carbon

Laravel defaults to storing all dates in UTC format, this is highly recommended as UTC time never changes unlike other time zones which have daylight savings. It is best practice to store and read dates in UTC, and then convert UTC to your required time zone for the user interface.

Great article below of a good way to implement time zones using Carbon within your Laravel app.

  • Repairing damaged or crashed MySQL tables

Always remember, regular backups of your databases are best practice, in the event the below fail, backups may be the only method you have to restore a working table or database.

Damaged or crashed MySQL tables due to an unsafe server shut downs, disk space limits or general MySQL failures? You will normally see something along the lines of “marked as crashed and should be repaired when using LOCK TABLES” within your MySQL log files.

MySQL has a number of tools to try and repair crashed / damaged tables. Log into your server as root and run the following commands. Replacing “/var/lib/mysql/” with the location of your DB files.

    Check what tables need repaired:

    myisamchk –check /var/lib/mysql/*/*.MYI

    Try a safe recovery:

    myisamchk –safe-recover /var/lib/mysql/*/*.MYI

Try a normal recovery (if safe recovery fails):

    myisamchk –recover /var/lib/mysql/*/*.MYI

Try a force recovery (as a final last step):

    myisamchk –safe-recover –extend-check –force /var/lib/mysql/*/*.MYI

    or:

    myisamchk –recover –extend-check –force /var/lib/mysql/*/*.MYI

  • Easy mobile browser detection for several major languages and web servers

All app’s and websites these days need to work for several devices including desktop, tablets and mobiles. It’s not always simple detecting the type of device being used and it can sometimes be tedious adding support to your app for something which seems very simple.

Does your chosen platform not have a pre-defined way of detecting a mobile browser? Check out Detect Mobile Browsers, has several copy / paste examples for several programming languages.

    http://detectmobilebrowsers.com/

Remember Apache, IIS and nginx detection examples also present for doing for pesky redirects.

  • Progressive JPEGs for fast website image loading and ux design

Want to Speed up your website images and improve user experience? Make sure you use progressive JPEGs (or interlaced JPEGs), it could help make your website load faster and retain visitors for a longer duration.

Take a look at the example below showing a normal baselayer JPEG and a progressive JPEG LOADING side by side.

    http://pooyak.com/p/progjpeg/

Instead of delaying page loading for high quality images, we can display lower quality and load the high quality whilst the user can still browser, view, read and purchase. Remember your visitors may be on a slow mobile connection! They don’t want to wait!

Some further reading? Take a look at the website below.

  • Xmas crawl at Bracken Rocks (2015) with the 4×4 scaler rigs

Yes, I know it’s almost end of March, but I finally got around the finish editing the various clips together from the Xmas crawl at Bracken Rocks (2015). If you’re not aware Bracken Rocks is where the RRCI Scale Nationals (now known as RCCarZone Scale Nationals) is hosted, and the first G6 competition is to be hosted here. It’s a great area for crawling, I would recommend anyone into crawling and scale rigs to attend the scale nationals, weekend of banter and driving.

    Hope you enjoy the video.

Paint stripped and shell prep update (Defender D90)

With work and other commitments, the D90 crawler project has come to a standstill, a lot of work has happened but we are still quite far from the finish line. Thought I would upload a number of images I have taken.

  • How to open a .Pages file using windows

How to open a .Pages file using windows

Today I was asked by a client how they open a .Pages files using a windows. Their computer didn’t recognise the file.

    What is a .PAGES file?

A .PAGES file is an archive technology created by Apple for use on its Mac OS, it is very similar to .zip files. They are normally created when using iWorks a Mac OS program similar to Microsoft Office, Mac users can share there documents however it defaults to using a .PAGES archive format which is only supported on Mac devices.

    How to open it?

It’s actually quite simple, just rename the file and change the .Pages extension to .zip and you can open it as a normal zip archive.

    • Right click file and select Rename
    • Replace .pages with .zip
    • Click yes when it popups up with “Are you sure?”
    • You should now be able to open the file

  • Luck is against me!

    Luck is against me!

Another Sunday so headed out early 7.30am just as the sun was coming out, light rain but nothing to bad. Went to some land nearby as we had not crawled there in a while. Was going well until I heard a branch breaking, turned out it wasn’t a branch and instead my drive shaft link to the rear wheels broke.

Got to order a new part now “vtr232072”, seems quite expensive for such a small part. Also noticed some of my tyres are letting water in and one seems to have lost all air and is flat. More work to get this thing ready for the G16 national event next year.

  • What am I aiming for? (Defender D90)

What am I aiming for? (Defender D90)

After some searching on the internet I have found a number of Defender D90’s which use the van / box backend type of look. I really like the look of the environmental agency vehicles with their side sliding entrance sections.

Decided I am going to be aiming for something based on these images with my own touches. Have the ascender looking good in no time, after its little accident… Take a look.
